As members of a professional organization, the sisters of Sigma Alpha strive for success in scholarship and professional development. The sisters take a variety of challeging classes, including those in the departments of Animal Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and many more.
In order to promote academic success, the scholarship chair organizes study dates throughout the semester, and invites all members and MCs to join in for some sister study time. In addition, many of the sisters take the same courses, and study regularly together throughout the semester.
In terms of professional development, we have two professional meetings per semester to encourage professional and career development. Our first speaker was Ms. Heather Urban from the University of Maryland's Career Center, who gave us some helpful tips about interviewing for jobs and professional schools. Our next speaker, on May 4th, will be Dr. Barbara Glenn from NASDA. Next semester, we are looking into hosting a speaker to teach us about proper parliamentary procedure, and also hosting an alumni panel for a discussion of careers in agriculture.
Next semester, for the first time, we hope to have a sister represent us at the Professional Greek Council meetings. Here, we will gain new insight into being part of UMD's professional greek community. This opportunity will open up doors for us to network with other professional fraternities and sororities, as well as participate in UMD's annual Geek Week and other professional events.
